Audio Description

Audio Description (AD) translates visual information into audio for people who are blind or have low vision. Using words that are succinct, vivid and imaginative, AD helps people enjoy equal access to live performances (theater, dance, opera, and education as well as sporting, social or corporate events), media (film, video, and television), exhibits (art galleries and museums, history and science museums, and visitor centers), and more.

In live performances and media, a trained describer inserts descriptions of critical visual elements into the natural pauses in dialogue and other sound elements. Descriptions are typically delivered through a wireless earphone allowing people to sit anywhere in the audience.

In museums or visual art exhibitions, AD tours meld the description of significant visual elements with an abbreviated version of any posted text. Descriptions may be delivered as part of a live or recorded tour through specialized playback systems. Recorded tours also include information about the operation of the device and basic navigation through the space.
