To describe a piece of pre-recorded media:
- A Describer first views the work to understand the story and to identify both the key visual elements that need to be described and the pauses into which description could be added
- Armed with that information, they go back and write descriptions of those elements which must simultaneously convey the necessary visual information of the story and fit into the selected pause
- Once the script is written, ideally it is reviewed and edited by a trained Audio Description Quality Control Specialist.
- The approved script is then:
- voiced by a narrator, which can be either the Describer or another voice talent, and
- recorded and mixed with the original media soundtrack by an audio engineer
The process by which a Describer gathers the information necessary to write Media Audio Description is highly individualized and personal.
Anyone across the spectrum of visual acuity can write Media Audio Description or be a Quality Control Specialist, including those who are blind, have low vision, or are sighted.
