Shows

Here are a few samples of our pre-show narratives for selected productions:

Betrayal

Stage and screen stars Helen Hunt, Robert Sean Leonard, and Ian Barford form the “eternal triangle” in Susan V. Booth’s major revival of Pinter’s famed masterwork.

The play takes place in a number of interior spaces including, among others, a study, a living room, a hotel bedroom, a pub, and a restaurant. These different spaces are created using a few sparse physical set pieces placed among, and surrounded by, a set of five, vertical, 15-foot square, flat panel scrims. A narrow strip of light frames the edges of all the panels, all the same color, though the colors change scene to scene.

Tommy

An unadulterated musical theater spectacle with a massive cast, exquisite production design, and fantastic sound. A reflection on surviving trauma, and the dangers of blind obedience to figureheads and cultural institutions. Tony Award-winning composer Pete Townshend and Tony Award-winning original director Des McAnuff find powerful resonance reexamining this iconic story for today.

In this production, a few fixed set pieces are complimented by a myriad of projections and other visual devices that seamlessly move and place us in multiple different environments. Beginning with pinball machines, these are represented by their most elemental components: a flat table before a vertical, illuminated, open white rectangle at the back representing the back glass display.

A Christmas Carol

A beloved adaptation about Ebenezer Scrooge’s transformation from a bitter misanthrope to a generous man. The production is known for its diverse cast and it’s incorporation of many languages, including sign language, into the celebration.

At the top of the show, a painted, fog & smoke filled scene of 19th century London, with St. Paul’s Cathedral at the right, fills the proscenium. At the front left and right of the stage stand sections of two narrow, dark green row houses. Soft, warm, yellow light glows from the frosted, rectangular panes of glass across their three floors. An evergreen wreath trimmed with red poinsettias adorns the door of each house, illuminated by a gas lamp on the outside of the buildings.

Matchbox Magic Flute

In her acclaimed signature style, Mary Zimmerman conceives a whimsical adaptation of Mozart’s The Magic Flute featuring a small cast, a five-piece orchestra made up of musicians in antique Middle Eastern costumes, and a chocolate-box theater set.

A large, red velvet curtain with gold fringe at the bottom completely covers a square, vaulted proscenium stage opening. Directly in front of the stage is a small orchestra pit, filled with musical instruments and music stands for five musicians. As the curtain rises, we are in a dense evergreen forest with several rows of trees front to back across the stage. Our characters move in and around various parts of the forest over the course of the show, the trees often sliding side to side themselves to reinforce that movement and to place us in different locations.
