Shows
Here are a few samples of our pre-show narratives for selected productions:
Beautiful
Witness the captivating story of Carole King’s meteoric rise to stardom, from humble beginnings to her undeniable status as one of the most celebrated voices in popular music.
Over a dozen vertical panels of varying widths hang floor-to-ceiling, side-by-side across the middle of the stage. Filling every inch of the panels, a cross-sectional, kaleidoscopic rainbow of patterns appear as strips of so many tapestries: delicate and vibrant concentric circles overlapping horizontal and vertical embroidery, stripes and solids, next to floral patterns and paisley.
The Little Mermaid
Dive beneath the waves with Ariel, a young mermaid with a captivating voice and an insatiable curiosity, as she defies her father and makes a daring deal for the chance to create the world of her dreams on land.
On the ocean floor, the ruins of large, stone castle walls appear at the back and along the sides of the stage, with curved, stone arch doors and windows. Colorful rays of sunlight stream down through the water from the unseen surface high above, in shades of violet, green, blue, and yellow. Actors unfurl long, wide, shimmering translucent sheets as they dance and move about the stage, reflecting and bending the light of the watery illusion.
Cat on a Hot Tin Roof
In the heat of the South under the gaze of patriarch Big Daddy, the expectations of marriage and family spoil. A birthday party brings a family’s skeletons to the surface as each one fights over the bones.
The action takes place over the course of a summer evening in a run-down plantation home in the Mississippi Delta in 1955. A Queen bed with a brass head and foot rail sits in the middle of a circular, distressed and damaged oak wood floor covering the stage. An eight-foot wide steel and glass chandelier hangs high above the bed. A couple ivory-colored end tables with elaborate scrollwork legs sit on either side of the bed at its head, each with a bedside table lamp with a fringed, ivory-colored lampshade. An overstuffed, open back, salmon and ivory-striped upholstered couch with a couple matching cylindrical pillows sits at the foot of the bed.
Guys and Dolls
Set in Depression-era Times Square, Guys and Dolls tells the story of a couple of big city gamblers and the women who love them.
As we wait for the show to begin, a marquee filled with curls, swirls, and stars with a single, central thread of traveling lights hangs frames the large proscenium stage. Across the front of a closed, sheer scrim curtain, the words “Guys and Dolls” appear in large, broad capital letters, becoming part of the marquee with a single line of yellow bulbs inside each letter.
